When was this line built, and why was it abandoned? Something similar happened in San Jose, California: around 2000 they built one more light rail line, to Almaden, probably with use of an abandoned railroad, but a few years ago abandoned that line, too. But it is just a mile, about 1,5 km, long.

I am not an engineer, but I would not count on it.

A lot has been stolen but also vandalised.

I don't think much of the original station can be recycled or integrated into the 'new' station.

Are the escalators on the stations still functional after almost 40 years of standing still?

I am going to visit the system one of these weeks and will therefore be able to provide photos.

Your explanation is correct, but it will still be easier to check the maps.

Below is the map, with the original route.

https://transphoto.org/photo/1568314/

The section up to Centenaire was completely finished and therefore accessible. Between Centenaire and Leopold, only (part of) the basic structure is ready. What followed (to Châtelet) existed only on paper and both the routes and the names of the stations have changed over the years.

Now to the current plan:

https://transphoto.org/photo/1569376/

The use of the name "Leopold" was still very popular (in certain circles) in the 1970s (when the plans were drawn up, i.e. 50 years ago), but not at all nowadays. In the meantime, some "mistakes" made by these former kings have been discovered ... and so it is no longer appropriate to name a station after them. That's why Leopold became Roctiau. "Corbeau" was already planned and will therefore stay, but actually: it has yet to be built, just like the rest of the line.
As far as I remember, preparatory groundwork was carried out here and there, but after 40 years there will be nothing left to see in nature.

Extra: here (scroll) you can find photos of the station Champeau (see map for the location please):

Also on this link you can find the necessary photos, but the same: scroll down.

The infrastructure remained long after the closure of this section: this was due to a necessary substation that was just there. It was only after its relocation that everything could be broken up.

This terminus, too, is a story in itself... One day I will try to post pictures with old city trams (of the S.T.I.C.) that ended there and for which the terminus was thus initially constructed...
The rivalry between both former city companies (S.T.I.C. and S.N.C.V.) explains why the line to Centenaire was never opened, but also why the trams on the existing branch to Soleilmont drive on the left side instead of on the right side. In the former region of the S.T.I.C. the passengers always got on at the right side (in buses) and with central platforms it would be left if the trams would drive at the right side. Apparently they made a political issue of it (!) and the only solution was to let the trams drive on the left side, so that the passengers on the central platforms could get on on the right side.... At the N.M.V.B. the passengers were already used to it: that was not the problem...

An excellent map: it not only shows the current (2022) network, but also all the projects that have ever been there, with their equally numerous variants. The finished line to Centenaire is also neatly drawn, with the official inauguration date (23/09/1985). In 2021, financial support was requested from the E.U. to realize this anyway. A new hospital would bring some progress, maybe..

This concerned the operation of the signalling system.
To understand this better, you should open the Google maps link and turn it 180°. There is still a bus stop in a wide street. So there were 2 tracks and the driver had 2 possibilities.
The first was to let his service end there and perform the necessary maneuvers to get on the other track.
The second is the most obvious: just follow the line and enter the single-track section.
Explaining the whole system would lead me too far, but it was an additional signal that served as a safety device, confirming that a tram had moved onto the single-track section.
This was not activated when a tram was moving in front of or on the intersection. This is related to the system of pre-signals and main signals.
This also applied if a tram passed there, heading for the above stop: the front signal went out, the main signal remained red.

Fine, but the ASVI organised every year such excursion. I received such an invitation with a newsletter from them, mostly with the 9148.

No, we organised this excursion ourselves. This was not planned by the ASVI. Purely for Dutch tram enthousiasts.

This normally happens every year in November with the 9148: then the entire network of Charleroi is covered. Usually in the morning with a trailer, and in the afternoon without a trailer, the unused part of the metro is visited.
This year, a ride with the 9148 was also announced. Apparently the tram was broken down and they chose to use a tram (the only one at that moment) in the new livery.

Just sent a short message and ask them to keep you informed about excursions in Charleroi.

A very interesting photo from an excursion.
The tram went past the station as far as it could go. Both the overhead line and the tracks end at this point. The tram really could not move any further. Once again, a great organisation!
