Scheme of mining commuter trolleybus in Datong, 1989.

The Datong Trolleybus line, which was the longest commuting trolleybuses line in the world, is also one of the more unknown systems in China, due to its comparatively earlier closure in the 1990s.

The system opened in 1985/1, according to "50 Years of Datong Buses", on a 3 km (in reality — slightly less) section from Xingergou to Wajinwan Mine. This was soon extended in the north to Silaogou, for a reported length of 10.8 km (again, actual figure is slightly less), according to a Xinhua report. In 1988/6, it was extended once again (according to a the 1988 Datong Yearbook), in the south to the Wangcun Mine, to a reported length of 16 km. However, the actual line seems to have been somewhat shorter, at 15.4 km. By 1988, there were 5 articulated trolleybuses.
There is no information on its closure, but the system was most likely closed around the 1990s due to financial issues related to mining in those years; Wajinwan Mine went bankrupt in 2003.

There are two known images of this system:
