Trolleybus: Infrastructure

Coimbra

The Coimbra trolleybus system (Rede de Tróleis de Coimbra) opened on 16 August 1947, initially supplementing the city’s tramway network before eventually replacing it entirely. It remained Portugal’s only trolleybus system for long periods of it's history. After decades of operation under SMTUC, the network entered decline in the 1990s and 2000s, with routes gradually converted to bus operation. Service was suspended in March 2021 due to roadworks and construction of the Metro Mondego BRT system, and the city council made the closure permanent in July 2024. Much of the overhead wiring remained in place during and after suspension, reflecting the system’s long-standing role in Coimbra’s urban transport history.

End of line. The trolleybus wires on Avenida Emídio Navarro, going towards Ponte de Santa Clara and the depot on the otherside of the Mondego river have been removed during Metro Mondego construction. This has virtually cut off the depot from the network.
