Another project by Raoul Mesnier that was constructed by Nova Companhia dos Ascensores Mecânicos de Lisboa (NCAML). Inaugurated on 14th August 1893 between Praça Luís de Camões and Largo da Estrela (now - Praça da Estrela) with an approximate length of 1.7km. The initial project of 1882 had another 300m from Praça da Estrela to Rua de São João dos Bencasados (now Rua de Silva Carvalho), but this portion of the route was never realized. A depot building was built on Largo da Estrela.
Due to the route going through very narrow streets, signalmen were positioned at several places as there was no space for two cars to pass each other. At each end of the route were manual turntables to turn the cars.
In 1901 a Carris electric tram line that connected Conde Barão and Rato was built that crossed Elevador da Estrela at the intersection of Calçada da Estrela and Rua de São Bento. At that time those were routes 22/23.
The Elevador da Estrela was similar to other two cable car systems in Lisbon. It had an endless cable embeded in the public road between 900mm gauge rails. But it had a unique (for Portugal) propulsion. While the other cable car systems were pulled by the cable which was set in motion from a central technical building, the Elevador da Estrela cars had acetylene gas engines which pulled the cars along the cable. The route was usually serviced by Maschinenfabrik Esslingen AG built motor car with a trailer car.
Over it's rather short lived history the line received several, not very positive nicknames - "Mata Cães" ("Dog killer", due to frequent cases of dogs getting run over by the cars) or "Maximbondo da Estrela" (due to a corruption of "machine pumps") to name the most famous ones. Towards the end of it's existence passangers complained a lot about the smell of acetylene that escaped from the engine due to poor combustion.
After the route was closed in 1913, it appears that its vehicles ended up being sold to bath stalls, market stalls and even guard houses in the countryside. Carris took over the route almost immidiately converting it to an electric tram route.
In 2024 the whole route of Elevador da Estrela is in use by tram route 28 if going from Praça Luís de Camões to Praça da Estrela. The modern day tram route takes a detour between Calçada da Estrela and Calçada do Combro when going towards Praça Luís de Camões. This eliminated the need of the signalmen used by NCAML.

Edifício de recolha do Elevador da Estrela
Inside the depot of Elevador da Estrela.
The depot was located somewhere near the upper terminus at Largo da Estrela (now Praça da Estrela), but exact location is unknown. Appearently builing does not exist in 2024.

Praça da Estrela
Upper terminus of Elevador da Estrela located in front of the Basílica da Estrela. Cable car #1 is being pushed onto the turntable located at the terminus. Another unknown cable car is partially visible ready to head back to Praça Luis de Camões. Noteworthy is the fact that at this time Portugal had left-hand traffic.
An open 2-axle Brill car can be seen passing by. Which indicates that the photo was taken between 1901 and 1913.

Calçada da Estrela
Signalmen giving the "advance" signal on Calçada da Estrela. Exact location unknown, but possibly at the corner of Calçada da Estrela and Rua de São Bento, as the streets behind the photographer are narrow and only one-way traffic is possible.
In 2024 tram route 28 headed to Estrela would come from behind the photographer and go up the Calçada da Estrela visible in the photo. Trams going the opposite way would make a right turn to the left of the photographer onto Rua de São Bento. When Carris took over this route the route from Estrela was rebuilt thus eliminating the need of signaling at this location.

Calçada do Combro
Signalmen changing the signal at the end of Calçada do Combro.
Exact location unknown, but possibly near the corner of Calçada do Combro and Rua do Poço dos Negros. The street behind the photographer (Rua dos Polais de São Bento) is too narrow for two way traffic.
In 2024 this route it taken by tram 28 going towards Estrela, while the opposite direction was diverted onto Rua do Poço des Negros when Carris took over this line to eliminate the need of signals.
