The main transport company in the city:

ATAC - Azienda per i Trasporti Autoferrotramviari del Comune di Roma. Established in 1909 change the name many times: AATM, ATM, ATG, ATAG and from 1946 is ATAC. It is the municipal company that runs the transportation network in the city. From 1919 it started to absorb the SRTO. From 1937 and 1972 operated the first trolleybus network (the biggest in Italy). From 2005 it runs the new trolleybus line. ATAC started the bus operation from 1927. the Metro and local railways arrived under the ATAC control from 2010.

SRTO - Società Romana Tramways Omnibus: was a public company that operated from 1881 to 1929 one of the Rome tram network. From 1911 to 1929 it fought a big battle against the municipal company. From 1904 the horse trams were abandoned and only electric tram ran in the city. All the tram fleet and the depots were acquired by the municipal company (ATAC).

STEFER - Società delle Tramvie e Ferrovie Elettriche di Roma: Other public company controlled by the city of Roma (acquired in a second time) that operated the suburban tram network and the narrow gauge railways to the "Castelli Romani" (the Roman Castells). The first was close for the suburban network in 1965 and the last urban tram ran in 1980 when started the operation with the A line of the metro, and for the second the last part is still running betwnen Termini and Centocelle. The STEFER operated also the Roma Lido railways , the B line and controlled the SRFN, company that owned the Roma Nord railways. It ran also the bus suburban network in the region. STEFER became 1976 ACOTRAL and then COTRAL but from 2000 COTRAL ran only the bus network and a new company (Met.Ro.) was in charge for the 2 metro lines and the 3 local railways. From 2010 with the merge all the network is run by ATAC
