Tram (unfinished project)

Metro Transportes do Sul
Founded 2007
www.mts.pt
|
History
The original project from 1995 for the Metro Transportes do Sul tram system centered in Almada saw the currently southward line ending at Corroios extend through the center of Seixal and Barreiro and end in Moita. This extension was supposed to rebuild the old Seixal railway bridge which got destroyed in 1969 after a collision with a ferry, thus separating the neighbouring cities.
The extension project has once again resurfaced in 2024 with a possible extenston towards Costa da Caparica (to the west), but also a new proposal for expansion towards east. First eastwards expansion phase would start at Corroios and go through the central area of Seixal, central area of Barreiro and finish at Alhos Vedros. This phase could be either LRT or BRT. Second phase (BRT only) would start at Alhos Vedros and go through central area of Moita and further towards Montijo and Alochete.
See a map of the original project (from 1995) and proposal from 2024 here.

Electric buses

Carris Metropolitana
Founded April 1, 2022
www.carrismetropolitana.pt

Carris Metropolitana provides bus services on inter-municipal routes in Barreiro with electric and regular buses (no special electric bus routes).
In Barreiro Transportes Sul do Tejo (based in Almada) and Alsa Todi (based in Setubal) operates under the Carris Metropolitana brand.
Routes in Barreiro municipality are 36xx (serviced by Transportes Sul do Tejo), 46xx and 47xx (serviced by Alsa Todi).
Carris Metropolitana route numbers always have 4 digits which help identify the type of route. First digit always indicates area (Barreiro is not part of any Carris Metropolitana area, as the city bus routes are serviced by an independent operator). Second digit inicates the type: city route (0-4, usually indicting one of the major cities in the area), inter-municipality route within same area (5) inter-municipality route to different area (6), routes to Lisbon (7-8), routes that go outside the Lisbon metropolitan area (9). Last two digits are simply the route number.
