Замена на автобусы, как на считавшийся более современным вид транспорта, ещё в 1937 году. Причём попытки заменить трамвай на автобус были ещё в 1929 году. Планы запустить троллейбус вместо трамвая осуществились только в 1948 году. Троллейбус, в свою очередь, закрылся в 1993 году, вскоре после конца ГДР. Примечательно, где-то прочитал, что Веймар яляется крупнейшим городом без трамвая на территории бывшей ГДР.
