The place is usually a street, terminus, station or depot and must be mentioned in the local language. The detailed rules, which have priority over the general description, can be found below.

1. General Rules for all the photos

1.1: The official routenumber on the moment of shooting must be indicated in the field routenumber. When the vehicle goes to the depot (or come from te depot) and the transport of passengers is also permitted, this (to / from depot) can be marked as a clarification in the field remark when the vehicle is running on its normal trajectory. When the photo is made outside the normal trajectory, the remark (to / from the depot) must be mentioned. It’s also allowed to put the destination in the field remark by the publishing of a photo. Exception to this rule are the metros in some countries and/or cities: in this case, the indication of a routenumber is not allowed. The decision is taken by the local and general editors.
1.2: It’s not allowed to use route numbers (even if they are mentioned on the vehicles) for photos that are made when regular passengers are not allowed to travel with the vehicle. Example: special journeys, some journeys to and from the depot.
1.3: The mention of a route number is optional when it’s not displayed on the vehicle or even the stop, but could be found in the official timetable.
1.4: When the vehicle is used for instructions for drivers or for any other service reason (if known at the moment of shooting or visible on the photo), then this should be entered as a note. The specific mention (a letter or what’s written on the display of the vehicle) is not a routenumber.
1.5: The use of an internal service number is not allowed as route number.
1.6: In the case that 2 places are indicated with a slash between them, the direction of travel determinates the order (from / to).
1.7: The location may never be mentioned for photos from inside the vehicle and from maps.
1.8: Most of the photo locations are present in the database. A hint is given after entering a few letters and it is mandatory to use it if it matches the photo location.

2. Language for countries using Cyrillic and Latin characters

2.1: Only the official language of the location may be used.
2.2: The use of alternative letters for specific situations, like umlauts are not allowed. Example: Kölner Straße must be used and not Koelner Strasse.
2.3: The use of alternative symbols, which are not present on most of the keyboards, is not allowed.
2.4: In the case of a bilingual location, both names must be used.
2.5: For certain neighbouring countries to Russia, the local language, Russian or both can be used.
2.6: A mix of different characters (Latin and Cyrillic) is forbidden.

3. Language for countries using characters other than Cyrrilic and Latin

3.1: The official names should be completed with a transliteration in Latin script in brackets. The foreign language is which is common used by tourists, mostly English, but French is also allowed in North-Africa.
3.2: When it’s impossible to note the name in the original language of the city or region, the use of the most common foreign language used by tourists is allowed without the local language.
3.3: If it’s impossible to note the name of the street, it’s allowed to note the name of the stops between which the vehicle was photographed with a slash preceded and followed by a space in between. (Stop A / Stop B).

4. Rules how to mention the location for streetvehicles (trams, trolleybuses, electric buses, funicular in the street)

4.1: If the photo is made in or along a street, the name of the street must be used. Optional it’s allowed to add as a remark in the comment of the photo the name of the stop.
4.2: It’s not allowed to use abrevations for streets (like Str.), places etc. Official abbreviations for titles, first names (e.g. just a letter) or places like a station or stop may be used insofar they are officaly mentioned and used locally.
4.3: When a picture was taken of a vehicle driving from one street to another, both names should be mentioned in the direction of travel with a slash preceded and followed by a space between them. Example Street A / Street B.
4.4: In the case a street is renamed, the name at the moment of the photo was taken must be used. Editors can add all the names (current and past) in one group.
4.5: If both sides of the street have a different name and the tram runs in the middle, both street names should be noted with a dash (-) between them. However, if the vehicle run along facades, then the name of the street where the vehicle runs should be used.
4.6: When a vehicle runs on a highway or simular, with only a letter and number, then the mention Highway (translated in the local language, like Autobahn, Autoroute...) must be mentioned. Example: Autobahn A40
4.7: If a photo is made in a shortcut without name and this between 2 stops, then the street of origin followed by the street of destination and with a slash in between should be used. In the case that no streetnames can be used, then the names of the stops must be used. The definition of a shortcut is a very short section, with maximum 1 stop or no stops at all. This rule also applies to the connection between the exit of a tram tunnel and the surface tram network. In this case, the names will be a station and a street.
4.8: If the route is longer than that described in the rule above, the word Section (localy translated as Abschnitt, Úsek... ) should be added to it. Example Section ABC / DEF. This refers to the stops and not to the entire route. When a photo is made at a stop on a place as described here, the name of the stop must be used without any prefix (no mention of stop). The name of the stop is always the current one.
4.9: If the photo is made in an underground station, then before the name the word Station must be added. The word to use is which is localy used on maps, like U-Bahnhof, Station... The use of quotation marks is allowed when it is customary in the local language and/or city. When different terms are used in the same city, the official term must be used for every case. Example: Station Diamant
4.10: In the case of an overground station, the name of the station will be used if no street name can be used. In the case this station, as a part of a tram system is along the street, the name of the street will be used.
4.11: In the case that the name of the overground stop or station must be used and this name is also used for another photo location, where other photos are made, then before the name of the overground station or stop the mention station or stop must be added.
4.12: If a photo is made between 2 stations, then both will be mentioned, including the term Station and with a slash preceded and followed by a space between them. (example: Station A / Station B). Here the driving direction of the vehicle is used, from origin to destination. In the case of crossing vehicles, the direction of travel of the vehicle in the foreground is decisive. If the photo was taken between the two crossing vehicles and they can both be primarily linked, the author has the choice of which location to use (Station A / Station B or Station B / Station A).
4.13: The use of names of tunnels and bridges are allowed. The name of a small bridge, which is a part of a street, can be optional mentioned as remark but can not be used as location. In that case, the name of the street must be used.
4.14: If the photo was taken in a turning loop that is not used as terminus and which is not located in a street, then the term loop should also be mentioned. Example: Schleife Kirchstraße.
4.15: When a photo was made inside a depot or entering / leaving the depot, then the mention Depot (localy translated, example Betriebshof) must be used. When more as one depot exist in the same system, then the name must be added after Depot. Example: Betriebshof Süd
4.16: When a photo is made at a terminus, the mention Terminus must be preceded by the official name of the terminus. Example: Endstelle Kirche. When more as one word in the same language exist, the term from the official maps, stops and / or timetable must be used. If this is not mentioned, then the most appopriate name will be used. It’s not allowed to use different terms or synonyms in the same city or system. This rule is not applicable in some Russian cities and other neighbouring countries.
4.17 Specific rules for terminals in Russia and some neighbouring countries. There are mostly two types of end points as: K/st (terminal station) and Kolitso, which is a place without a control center operating at the time of filming. Brackets needs to be used. Examples: K/st "Stalevar Stadium" and Koltso "Ilyinsky Pond”.

5. Specific rules for street vehicles (trams, trolleybuses, electric buses, funicular in street) in a single city system

5.1: In a single city system it’s not allowed to mention the name of the city when the photo was taken in the same city.
5.2: When a photo was taken outside the actual city and it concerns a separate independent city which doesn’t exist in the database, then the name of the city, where the photo was taken, should also be mentioned. In this case, it must be done as follow: City, Street.
5.3: When a photo was taken outside the actual city and it concerns a seperate independent city which exist in the database, the photo location must be linked on the location of the city were the photo was made and not the city of the vehicle. In such cases, only the name of the street and not the city must be used. Example: a vehicle from a Cologne tram in Bonn must be linked to the vehicle (in the database of Cologne) but the photo location (which is by default Cologne) must be changed to Bonn and then the street (in Bonn) must be used.

6. Specific rules for street vehicles (trams, trolleybuses, electric buses, funicular in street) in a multiple city system

6.1: In a multiple city system, the name of the city must always be mentioned together with the name of the specific location. Example: Mannheim, Breite Straße
6.2: Exceptions on the rule above are the depots, which will be mentioned on a standard way with first the term and then the place or name of the depot.
6.3: If a photo was taken outside the multiple city system, rule 5.2 applies.

7. Specific rules for light rail (metro, Maglev, monorail ...)

7.1: If the photo is made in an underground or an overground station, then before the name the word Station must be added. The word to use is which is localy used on maps, like U-Bahnhof, Station... The use of quotations marks for the name of the station is determined by the local language. Example: U-Bahnhof Tierpark, Станция "Автово"
7.2: In the case the overground station is located in the middle of a street, the name of the station and not the street will be used.
7.3: In the case of a crossing station, it’s allowed to make a clarification as a route number or floor between brackets after the name of the station. Example: Stanice Muzeum (linka A).
7.4: If a photo is made between 2 stations, then both will be mentioned, including the term Station and with a slash preceded and followed by a space between them. (example: Station A / Station B)

8. Specific rules for funiculars

8.1: When a photo is made in the station, only the name of the station must be used, as mentioned in the time table or on the route map.
8.2: If no other intermediate stops exists and the photo is made along the route (between the two terminuses) then the name of the system will be used as photo location. It’s almost impossible to determine the direction of the vehicle. Example: Bergbahn Augustusburg
8.3: If intermediate stops exists and the photo is made between them, then both will be mentioned, including the term Station and with a slash preceded and followed by a space between them. Because it’s impossible to determinate the direction of the vehicle, the order will be determined according to the alphabet (example: Station A / Station B).

9. Special cases

9.1: When a photo shows 2 kind of vehicles where different rules apply, then the rule of the main object will be applied. When both vehicles can receive a primary link in the publication, the rules of the vehicle of the most visible vehicle will be applied.
9.2: When a photo is taken along a highway or railway line during a vehicle transfer, the location used should be that of the original city or destination city. The nearest city (origin or destination) is decisive here. It’s not allowed to use a city in the area of the shot.
9.3: When a photo is taken in an existing city in the database (including a depot) and this during the transfer from a vehicle, the vehicle must be linked to the closest city (depart or destination) and the location is the place of shooting.
9.4: When a photo is taken during the transfer between the factory and it’s final destination (the customer), the photo must be linked to it’s final destination, including the photo place. It’s not allowed to use a city in the area of the shot. An exception is when the photo was made together with other existing vehicles in the database. In this case, the place of shooting must be used.
9.5: A photo made during an exhibition must be linked to a special gallery of this exhibition, in the city of the exhibition. When possible or available, the vehicle must be also linked to it’s owner.
9.6: If a vehicle is spotted after it was withdrawn and not preserved as a museum vehicle, it must be linked to the location where it was last used. Exceptions are vehicles which receive a new public function, like a monument or a shop: these vehicles can be linked to the place where they are spotted if the city exist in the database. Former vehicles, used by example as shelter, must always be linked to the former city and never to the city where it’s located.
9.7: If no solution can be found in the rules, the local editor (or by default: the general editor) will name the location. It’s never allowed to give more as one name for the same photo location. Example: a long triangle, located in the fields, where the stops all have different names and where different tramlines ride all possible routes.
9.8: When conflicting official information is available, local editors will have to reach a consensus so that different designations are not present for the same route or photo location. If no consensus can be reached locally, the issue should be raised to the administration, which will make a final decision after obtaining all arguments.
