Ақпарат

Historical Overview:
The history of the Potsdam tramway stretches back impressively far. It all began in 1880 with a horse-drawn tram – a precursor that laid the foundation for later electric operation. Electric trams were in operation in Potsdam as early as 1907, paving the way for a system that has continually expanded in technology and scope. This evolution reflects a city's reputation for harmoniously combining tradition and progress.

Technical Data and Route Network:
Today, the Potsdam tram network is the backbone of public transport in the city. With a total route length of approximately 30 kilometers (with the lines totaling approximately 74.5 kilometers), the network is standard gauge (1435 mm). It operates with a 750 volt DC power system via overhead lines, ensuring an environmentally friendly and efficient energy supply. The general timetable operates every 20 minutes on all weekdays – during peak times, certain lines, such as line 96, even operate every 10 minutes on central sections.

The route network in detail:
The network is operated by ViP Verkehrsbetrieb Potsdam GmbH, a company that has played a key role in urban mobility since 1994 as a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Potsdam. The network currently comprises several lines, the most important of which run as follows:

Line 91: Pirscheide Station <-> Rehbrücke Station
Line 92: Bornstedt, Kirschallee <-> Bisamkiez or Am Stern, Gaußstr. (Weekends to Kirchsteigfeld, Marie-Juchacz-Straße)
Line 93: Glienicker Brücke <-> Rehbrücke Station
Line 94: (Pirscheide Station) Charlottenhof Palace <-> Babelsberg, Fontanestraße
Line 96: Jungfernsee Campus <-> Kirchsteigfeld, Marie-Juchacz-Straße
Line 98: (Charlottenburg Palace) Platz der Einheit <-> Rehbrücke Station
Line 99: (S Hauptbahnhof) Platz der Einheit <-> Babelsberg, Fontanestraße

Vehicle Fleet and Operating Concept
The Potsdam tram vehicles reflect the successful combination of tradition and modern comfort. The fleet includes a variety of models: older models such as the Tatra KT4 Dm are complemented by modern Siemens Combino and Variobahn trams. This diversity allows for the various operational requirements to be met – from dense service during peak times to comfortable transport in quiet traffic. Despite a maximum speed of 60 km/h, the almost entirely double-tracked network ensures smooth and timely operation.

Importance for the City and Outlook
The tram is far more than just a means of transport in Potsdam. It is a moving testament to regional history that reflects the pulse of the city. The central interchange hub, the Platz der Einheit (Unity Square), is the heart of the network, where all lines converge and enable seamless transfers. Furthermore, the system is an integral part of a modern, sustainable transport concept that reduces car traffic, mitigates environmental pollution, and promotes urban redevelopment in the spirit of environmentally friendly mobility.

The network is expected to continue to grow in importance in the future. Infrastructure modernizations, digital passenger information systems, and possibly an expansion of the route network are just some of the measures aimed at meeting future requirements. Potsdam thus remains a prime example of a successful mix of historical identity and forward-looking urban mobility.
