The driver (aged 47) has unfortunately passed away in hospital. He was medically incapciatated at the time of the accident.

It is not known if the trolleybus will be repaired, as the body was damaged and some electronics were submerged.

The driver was unconscious, and the batteries were on the roof, so the power wasn't disconnected until specialists turned it off.

All 5 others are still at the factory. There is also one articulated trolleybus there, presumably for the other BRT line that wasn't built.

I wrote the full details here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998_Sheny...ccident

and konst wrote a shorter Russian version here: https://transphoto.org/news.php?all=1&ci...&ntext=

In short, after an accident where the trolleybus was not at fault, the mayor and the head of the transport department (who bribed the mayor to get his position) called the trolleybus obsolete. In 1 year, the 3rd largest network in China was completely dismantled. When replacing with diesel and gas buses, the transport department head took bribes from bus builders to replace trolleybuses.

There was already some private interests promoting the 'superiority' of diesel and gas buses, and this accident accelerated the process due to the immense negative press created by the mayor's office, particularly in the northern provinces. In Qiqihar, only route 106 was left at the end of 1999; overall, the accident was a catalyst that led to many cities ending trolleybuses or significantly reducing the network.

'Sharyo' (車輛) means 'vehicles'. The full name means Japan vehicle manufacturing company.

At least 1 remained at the factory.

The orange one in the article below is one of these trolleybuses.

https://m.baidu.com/sf_baijiahao/s?id=16...ealtime

An original news article in 2016 stated that all 15 were handed over to the transport authourities of Marrakesh and were waiting shipment.

The current state of the trolleybus is unknown, as Yangzijiang had some form of financial mishap in 2017 and started going through bankruptcy proceedings by 2020. Reportedly, they are in ¥2.3 billion of debt. This would be why further trolleybuses were not bought from Yangzijiang.

Also, Dongfeng-Yangzijiang renamed itself back to Yangzijiang in 2016/03/31, so these are probably not called Dongfeng trolleybuses.

Two separate sources explain the situation for the 2 different models;

for the Youngman trolleybuses, the 2012 and some of the 2013 batch were set aside in 2017 when the trolleybus network was reduced as a result of metro construction. However, when set aside, mandatory yearly checks were not performed and after missing 3 checks in a row, they were withdrawn.

The others, Yutong trolleybuses, were apparently bought in a contract with an extremely low price - perhaps up to 1/2 the expected price of such a trolleybus. Consequently, their quality was quite bad.

All of the trolleybuses that I had seen yesterday were in good technical condition. Although a few of these trolleybuses had very loud compressors, the motor, autonoumous course, rod catchers, air conditioning, stop broadcast system all worked well.

Unfortunately, there has been no precedence in transferring (trolley)buses from Shanghai to other systems/cities. However, I would suppose that if an enterprise offered more money than a local scrapper, it could be sold elsewhere. There shouldn't be any regulations against selling these trolleybuses abroad.

Supercapacitator buses are uncommon in China, compared to other electric buses; perhaps most cities see it as more inconvenient, due to the more frequent charging needed.

8, 13, 22, 25 and 28 are now operated wholly by electric buses. 6 is also expected to be switched to electric buses soon.

This leaves 6, 14, 15, 19, 20, 23, 24 and 71.

Quote (Yoojeen, 12.01.2023):
> Am I right?

Yes, there is a fear among many bus fans in Shanghai that after these trolleybuses serve 8 years and are withdrawn, the network will be further cut to only route 14 and 20. Unfortunately, while a newspaper poll actually showed a majority of people wanted to preserve the network, there was little joint action and the city government has already decided that trolleybuses are outdated transport, as seen in the choice for a retro design.
You can watch the prototype vehicle S5A-0001 here, with a different design: https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1Sq4y1N7qA/

The trolleybus route usage is declining, but this is because the overall area that the trolleybus serves is becoming more residential, so it also affects other bus routes that don't cross to more office or industrial areas.

There is still hope for development; there is a possibility that future BRT lines will use trolleybuses, like route 71. Currently, route 71 is being lengthened to the west, although the new section will probably travel on autonoumous course.

The system in Hangzhou is at more risk: no new trolleybuses have been purchased since 2015, and more than half of the trolleybuses bought around those years have already been retired. At least in Shanghai, electric buses don't substitute for trolleybuses.

These are IMC. I added battery information into the notes. However, the electrical ouptut to the 240kW motor is limited regardless of whether the trolleybus is on wires or on battery.

These are probably reverse engineered Tatra T6B5K.

There are a few noticeable differences between this tram and a Tatra (electrical equipment, no space for route - the newspaper said it blocked the driver's view).

Hello, I found an interesting video that covers this section of the streets in Hungnam district: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jksC2scJPMc&t=107s (1:47-2:25), showing this section: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/39.84769...636!3e2

There are (were) reinforced concrete poles on both sides of the road, with signs of rust at about the level of contact network arms. A pole that stands a few meters from the road at where the road turns would have, if it were a trolleybus pole, be used to provide tension in the turn. I suspect the Hungdok branch formerly went a longer distance. The trolleybus magazine issue 246 proposed a somewhat similar route that extended to Hungnam station. Note that the area around the Kim Il Sung statue in Hungnam was extensively landscaped, and the poles end before there.

About the branch to Ryongsong, it seemed to have operated from 1991 to 2003 or before - if it existed at all. A North-South joint survey project conducted 1990s to 2006 mentioned only two trolleybus routes in Hamhung (Hoiyang to Doksong and Hoiyang to Hungdok). 2003 Google earth image shows very few tire marks going south at where the line from Hamhung station should have split into branches.

The exact time was not mentioned, but the prisoner did not have to do too much work: the tram has a relatively thin wooden roof. The knife was 25.4 cm long, and the prisoner had sharpened it beforehand, such that it was more like a saw than a knife.
Apparently, the other prisoners talked loud enough that nobody heard the roof being sawed.
