But: comrade Mathias Vladimir is not far from the truth. Making photos in the middle of the square gave sometimes problems with police, but not this time: it's more easy to say 'no photo!!' then (for the police) to explain in English that standing in the middle of the square is dangerous / forbidden or whatever.
On the other hand: I was arrested the same morning for making photos on the same place, with the station in the background. The police station was behind me and the prison was in the basement...

Но: товарищ Матиас Владимир недалек от истины. Фотосъемка в центре площади иногда приводила к проблемам с полицией, но не в этот раз: легче сказать «нет фото !!» затем (для полиции) объяснить по-английски, что стоять в центре площади опасно / запрещено или что-то еще.
С другой стороны: я был арестован тем же утром за то, что делал фотографии в том же месте, на фоне станции. Полицейский участок был позади меня, а тюрьма была в подвале ...

IS IT so dangerous only in Ukraine???

Or Russia too?

I never had a problem with photos in Russia. Or I had very good luck :))

You can have luck, or be on the wrong place on the wrong moment. Everywhere.
Some places can be tricky, but also: everywhere in the world. Making photos in some suburbs of Paris can also give problems... but not with the police.

I could definitely second that. Transportation-related photography can yield harassment anywhere in the world, 'East' or 'West'. And at any time. I just came back from Ukraine, where I was harassed last week in Lviv suspected of being a Russian spy ;) At the same time besides Paris I could add many 'Western' cities where I had problems with photography in 'questionable' neighborhoods. Starting with Gothenburg (a clear leader), Lyon, Mulhouse, Rotterdam and many others. Even Anthwerp makes the list - the area along the Line 12 immediately north of the Central Station... The reasons might be different everywhere, but the outcome is the same: "No photos!"...
